IV therapy

Understanding IV therapy
Home IV therapy allows patients to receive intravenous medications, fluids, or nutrition in the comfort of their own home rather than a hospital or infusion center. Skilled nurses manage vascular access devices, administer ordered infusions, monitor for adverse reactions, and educate patients on line care between visits.
IV therapy at home is used for a wide range of treatments including antibiotics, hydration, pain management, and total parenteral nutrition. Safe administration requires strict aseptic technique, accurate flow rate management, and vigilant monitoring for complications.
How Home IV Therapy Works
Your nurse will access the IV line, prepare medications according to pharmacy instructions, set the appropriate infusion rate, and monitor you during administration. They will also flush the line, apply sterile dressings, and document your response to treatment.
Caring for Your IV Line at Home
Keep the dressing clean and dry. Do not submerge the access site in water. Avoid pulling or tugging on the line. Wash hands thoroughly before and after any contact with the line or dressing. Follow your nurse's schedule for dressing changes.
When to Contact Your Care Team
Contact your nurse immediately for signs of infection at the insertion site — redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage. Report fever, chills, or shaking during or after an infusion. Notify your care team if the line appears damaged, kinked, or displaced. Call 911 if you experience sudden difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe swelling during an infusion.
