Adaptive equipment training

Understanding Adaptive equipment training
Adaptive equipment assessment and training is a specialized occupational therapy service that matches patients with devices designed to compensate for physical or cognitive limitations. From long-handled reachers and sock aids to specialized kitchen tools and bathroom safety equipment, the right devices can dramatically improve a patient's independence and safety at home.
Selecting adaptive equipment is not a one-size-fits-all process. An occupational therapist evaluates the patient's specific limitations, daily routine, home layout, and personal goals before recommending any device. Equally important is hands-on training — equipment that is not used correctly provides a false sense of security and may actually increase injury risk.
Assessment and Device Selection
Your therapist will evaluate your functional abilities, the tasks you find most challenging, and your home environment. Recommendations may include bathroom safety equipment such as grab bars, shower chairs, and raised toilet seats; dressing aids like button hooks and elastic shoelaces; or kitchen tools adapted for limited grip strength or one-handed use.
Training for Safe and Effective Use
Each recommended device comes with hands-on training in your home. Your therapist demonstrates proper use, supervises your practice, and adjusts equipment placement for optimal safety. Family members and caregivers are included in training so they understand how each device works and can provide appropriate support.
When to Contact Your Care Team
Contact your therapist if equipment breaks, no longer fits properly, or if your functional abilities change and current devices no longer meet your needs. Report any incidents where equipment failed or caused a near-miss safety event. If you fall or are injured while using adaptive equipment, call 911 immediately if you cannot get up safely or suspect a fracture.
