Home safety evaluation

Understanding Home safety evaluation
Home safety evaluation is a proactive occupational therapy service that identifies environmental hazards and recommends modifications to prevent falls, injuries, and accidents. Therapists conduct room-by-room assessments evaluating lighting, flooring, furniture placement, bathroom accessibility, stair safety, and the overall suitability of the home for the patient's current functional level.
Most accidents among home health patients occur within their own homes, often due to preventable environmental factors. A professional safety evaluation looks beyond obvious trip hazards to assess less visible risks like inadequate lighting at nighttime pathways, scalding water temperature, insecure rugs, and poor ergonomics in areas where patients spend the most time.
What the Safety Evaluation Covers
Your therapist will assess every area you use regularly — bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living areas, and entryways. They evaluate floor surfaces, lighting levels, access to frequently used items, stair safety, emergency exit paths, and the placement of furniture and medical equipment. A written report of findings and recommendations is provided.
Implementing Safety Modifications
Recommendations range from simple no-cost changes like rearranging furniture and removing throw rugs to installations such as grab bars, handrails, improved lighting, and non-slip surfaces. Your therapist helps prioritize modifications based on risk severity and can recommend contractors or community resources for installations that require professional help.
When to Contact Your Care Team
Contact your therapist if your living situation changes, you acquire new medical equipment that affects your home layout, or you experience a fall or near-fall at home. Report any safety concern promptly — early intervention prevents injuries. If you fall and are unable to get up, experience a head injury, or are trapped due to an environmental hazard, call 911 immediately.
